Meet Our Dogs and Pups

Norton has recently been retired as a breeder for ADI, but is the father of some dogs who have recently graduated (Garrett, Gesi and Gayle).  He continues to do important work for the Institute by doing reading demonstrations, appearing at talks and TV appearances (remember him on the Oprah show with Bonnie?)  He also provided service dog help to Jorjan while she was in a wheelchair recuperating from ankle replacement surgery.

Training Stories

Modica is about to embark on a new adventure—he will be moving to Washington D.C. to begin our new program called “Paws for Purple Hearts.”   Veterans who have posttraumatic stress syndrome will train Modica and a few of his littermates.  He will be matched with a veteran who became disabled in the war.  Veterans helping veterans—an important new program in our mission of “Helping Dogs Help People.”

Quisha is a “teenager” who enjoys her training sessions with one of our college students.  She also gets to visit children in a local elementary school for our reading program.  Kids love to snuggle up to her and read her a book (which improves their reading skills and makes it an enjoyable activity at the same time).

Roz is one of the “R” litter that was specially bred for our Vine Mealybug scent detection program.  She and her littermates are well on their way to becoming ready to run through the vineyards and providing early detection of this devastating pest.  It’s a fun job, too!

The new “S” golden retriever litter arrived on December 21, 2006.  Spice, Santos, Simone, Seddy, Sullivan, Stuart, Starkey and Seymour have started their training in “early puppy education” for their future work as service dogs.  Parents are Marilyn and Sully (a stud who was graciously loaned to us by Guide Dogs for the Blind).
